Volunteering At The Crisis Centre
Volunteering at the Crisis Centre is a great way to make a contribution to your community.
Volunteering at the Crisis Centre
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Crisis Prevention, Intervention and Information Centre for Northern BC. This information is designed to address any questions you might have about being a crisis worker with the Crisis Centre for Northern BC.
Volunteering for the Crisis Centre can be a very rewarding experience. The work, although at times challenging, is very fulfilling. Many people from all walks of life, with many different life experiences and backgrounds, choose to volunteer. You do not need any experience, we will ensure you are fully trained and prepared to answer all the calls.
There are many benefits to volunteering with the Crisis Centre. Volunteering brings us into contact with people and issues that we might otherwise not encounter. These experiences can cause us to re-evaluate long-held beliefs and prejudices. In time, new beliefs may arise that are truer to our expanded experience of life.
Volunteering offers opportunities to explore new career fields, try out new skills, and gain valuable experience. Also, volunteerism provides many opportunities for leaving a legacy. Through volunteering, one can have a lasting impact on individuals, institutions and even communities.
Crisis line responders are not therapists or counsellors. The Crisis Centre’s approach can be called non-directive, or client-centered, crisis intervention. Therapy, on the other hand, deals with ongoing concerns that impair the individual’s ability to live as effectively and fully as they may desire. The goal of therapy is to deal with and/or resolve the usually long standing, historical, and interconnected concerns. The goal of crisis intervention is to restore the caller’s ability to cope in the immediate future. Crisis line workers therefore are the paramedics of emotion. We perform emotional first aid on people who are in crisis, restore them back to balance, and then refer them on to long term help.
If you are an empathic, caring individual interested in giving back to your community, please find out more about volunteering with us. We would love to have you on board!
